SMS & ElvalHalcor: energy efficiency and sustainability

Bar ohne Namen

The two companies SMS group and ElvalHalcor are pulling in the same direction when it comes to sustainable aluminium production and energy efficiency: as part of their collaboration, ElvalHalcor is using the Viridis Energy & Sustainability Suite from SMS group for the aluminium flat rolling mill at the Oinofyta site in Greece.

The partnership aims to minimise the environmental impact, improve operational efficiency and reduce the CO2 footprint. This will be realised, among other things, through the use of automated machine learning techniques that enable consumption forecasts based on the production plan. To achieve these goals, SMS is using agile execution methods to implement the Viridis Energy & Sustainability Suite. This enables optimal utilisation of the benefits while taking site priorities into account. The integration of more than 70 assets into Viridis Performance provides a comprehensive foundation for realising these sustainability and efficiency goals within the partnership.

Viridis Energy & Sustainability Suite

Viridis Performance offers the possibility to model energy and media consumption by taking into account various contextual factors, such as raw material and product characteristics, production stages and quality standards. The software enables a precise understanding of the effects of different production routes. It also enables real-time monitoring of consumption deviations and automatically generates events. An online logbook is used to record data. Checklists with standard operating procedures and countermeasures ensure rapid correction of deviations, while accurate quantification contributes to performance improvement.

The software utilises automated machine learning resources to automatically calculate targets that remain relevant as production conditions change. Over 70 assets, including melting furnaces, preheating furnaces and hot and cold rolling mills, are integrated into the system.

Viridis Grids supports Elval by accurately and autonomously calculating the predicted energy consumption based on the production schedule. Leakages are detected by the online mass balancing of the measuring devices, while the online electricity demand is determined based on measurements and current production.

With the installation of these two modules of the Viridis Energy and Sustainability Suite, Elval is well equipped to meet the ever-increasing demands for responsible and energy-efficient management in the aluminium industry.

The partnership between SMS and Elval exemplifies the shared vision of sustainable and responsible practices in the industry.

ElvalHalcor is one of the world's leading producers of flat rolled aluminium. With an annual capacity of 450,000 tonnes, the project contributes significantly to the company's goal of reducing CO2 emissions and optimising the entire production process.
