"ALUMINIUM is a place for everyone"
Bar ohne Namen
Three Questions with ... Yasmin Ouiriemmi, Product Manager ALUMINIUM
“Women can do aluminium, too” – this is the motto of the “Women With Metal – the ALUMINIUM Awards,” which will be presented for the first time at this year's ALUMINIUM world trade fair. These awards aim to promote equality and diversity in the aluminium industry, recognize the outstanding achievements of women, and strengthen their position in the sector.
Despite progress in various industries, women remain underrepresented in many fields, including aluminium. For instance, the proportion of female board members in the industry in Germany was just 15.9% at the beginning of the year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the gender gap in the labor market remained at 39% in 2023. Women are particularly underrepresented in trades, industry, and agriculture: only 10.8% of the workforce in craft professions in Germany were female in 2022, and EU-wide, it was just 10.9%. In the EU, the share of women in the industry for operating machinery and assembly work was only 18.1%. However, there is significant variation across EU countries: in Greece and Luxembourg, the share of women in the industry was 8.0% in 2022, while in Hungary, it was 30.3%.
These figures highlight the importance of initiatives and projects like the "Women With Metal – the ALUMINIUM Awards." Yasmin Ouiriemmi, Product Manager of ALUMINIUM at the organizer RX, summarizes how the idea for the awards came about, what it means to her, and why it is so important for both the trade fair and the industry.
Question 1: How did the “Women With Metal – the ALUMINIUM Awards” come about?
As the Product Manager of the ALUMINIUM World Trade Fair and a young woman with various touchpoints in the industry, I am well aware of the stereotypes surrounding women in the industry and how difficult it is for women to gain a foothold there. Therefore, it is a personal concern of mine to create more visibility for this issue. It’s about being seen and heard and giving women the recognition and support they deserve. Particularly now, solidarity in the aluminium industry is crucial, and everyone, regardless of gender, can contribute to and advance the industry.
Through our long-time partner Nadine Bloxsome (Membership & Sustainability Manager, UK Aluminium Federation (ALFED) & Editor Aluminium International Today), we became aware of the Women With Metal conference and quickly got in touch with the founder, Kirsty Davies-Chinnock. This led to the joint idea of giving it a grand stage at ALUMINIUM 2024. After all, the trade fair offers a fantastic opportunity for this.
ALUMINIUM is not just a platform for the entire aluminium industry, it is a place for everyone!
Question 2: Why is this important for the ALUMINIUM trade fair?
The awards are important to us as a trade fair because, as a platform for the entire aluminium industry, we are a place for everyone. A place to feel comfortable, but also a place where problems and challenges can be discussed. As this platform, we are also a role model and bear a certain responsibility. Therefore, it is important to us to do everything we can to strengthen the industry – and this includes ensuring equality and diversity! Promoting the involvement of women in the industry brings many benefits, such as addressing the skilled labor shortage in the industry. This, in turn, strengthens the sector's competitiveness.
The awards are a crucial step towards the future of the industry, towards a more diverse and inclusive work environment that considers not only the industry's needs but also the potential and talents of all genders.
Question 3: What are you most looking forward to at ALUMINIUM this year?
I am very excited that the awards' concept has turned into a mission and finally into reality – from the very first moment, I looked forward to implementing this project. I can’t wait to review all the nominations as a jury member and I am especially looking forward to the awards ceremony at ALUMINIUM.
I also look forward to the trade fair itself, the energy on-site, the atmosphere, the exchange, and personal conversations with partners and exhibitors – to all the women and men who make the industry and the fair so special.

The award ceremony, organized in collaboration with Women With Metal, the UK Aluminium Federation (ALFED), and Aluminium International Today, will be held on the second day of the fair, October 9, on the stage of the ALUMINIUM Conference in Hall 3 of the Düsseldorf Exhibition Center.
Nominations are open until June 15. With categories like "Unsung Shero," "Role Model," "Sustainable & Innovative Leader," "Young Leader," and "Male Ally," the awards offer a comprehensive range of categories that highlight the diverse aspects of women's achievements and contributions, as well as their supporters in the aluminium industry.
