Competence centre for large castings from VW

Bar ohne Namen

Large castings as key technology for structural components of future all-electric platforms

Volkswagen Group Components has opened the Large Castings Competence Centre in Kassel – large castings are regarded as a key technology for structural components of the Group's future all-electric platforms. This underlines the plant's role as a central Group centre for the electric powertrain, with a focus on the further development of power electronics. The Kassel site is increasingly developing into a key supplier for e-mobility and is an example of the successful transformation within the Group.

Key competences for e-drive systems and large castings

The opening of the Large Castings Competence Centre marks a milestone in the strategic orientation of the site, which contributes to competitiveness, job security and the development of high-quality cast components for future Volkswagen Group vehicle models, including, for example, a rear end and a high-voltage battery housing.

The site strategy continues to focus on proven products, researches new technologies and continues to emphasise quality, productivity and competitiveness. Accordingly, the focus is intended to optimise development processes, shorten production times and strengthen the expertise of the entire component plant.

As a first step, pre-series production of the pulse inverter has started in Kassel; in future, the newly created competence centre will bring the production processes to series maturity. In addition to the expansion of the electric drivetrains, the site is planning to phase out exhaust system production and expand stator assembly for electric drives.

Thomas Schmall, Group Board Member for Technology and CEO of Volkswagen Group Components, explains: “Volkswagen Group Components is increasingly developing into a key supplier for e-mobility. Kassel is an example of successful transformation: step by step, the site is building up new key competences in e-drive systems and large castings. In this way, the Group Components sites are playing their part in the Volkswagen Group's future strategy.”
