Hydro & Volvo on net-zero mission
Bar ohne Namen

Vehicles without emissions
Hydro and the Volvo Group announced a strategic partnership at COP28 in Dubai that will support the global transport manufacturer in its goal of offering zero-emission vehicles. As partners in the First Movers Coalition, the two companies are also committed to supporting each other on the path to zero-emission value chains.
One of the goals of the partnership is a comprehensive roadmap for the supply of primary aluminium with an 80 percent reduced carbon footprint compared to today's global industry average. Overall, the partnership not only includes the establishment of a roadmap for near-zero aluminium production by 2030, the collaboration also aims to enable greater use of low-carbon aluminium in Volvo's production, with the goal of supplying net-zero aluminium by 2040. The objective is also to validate new recycling standards for alloys to optimise the reuse of materials and explore closed-loop value chains that allow more scrap to be recycled. As part of the partnership, the two companies are also exploring how the Volvo Group's innovative transport solutions can be used in Hydro's mining operations in Brazil to further reduce the carbon intensity of the aluminium value chain.
Hydro has set itself the goal of driving the transition to green aluminium by 2050, while contributing to a nature-friendly future through initiatives in the areas of biodiversity, waste management and land use.
Movers Coalition
The agreement between Hydro and Volvo Group was signed as part of the First Movers Coalition, which was launched by US President Joe Biden and the World Economic Forum at COP26 to decarbonise heavy industry and long-haul transport, which account for more than a third of global emissions. The global initiative now includes almost 100 companies working together to decarbonise the seven hard-to-decarbonise industrial sectors that are currently responsible for 30 percent of global emissions: Aluminium, aviation, chemicals, concrete, shipping, steel and trucking, along with innovative carbon reduction technologies.
