Millions for the Circular Economy

Bar ohne Namen

Speira is investing 40 million euros to expand its recycling capacities at the Rheinwerk site, aiming to annually save up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions and strengthen its position as a leading player in European aluminium recycling.

The completion of the new furnace is planned for 2025, with production scheduled to begin in early 2026. Simultaneously, the third of four existing casting facilities will be optimized for recycling alloys. This dual approach will further reduce the ecological footprint of the Rheinwerk while increasing its capacity.

"Europe's Number One in Aluminium Recycling"

"We aim to become Europe's number one in aluminium recycling," explains Boris Kurth, Head of Can Business at Speira and of the Recycling and Foundry Operations at Rheinwerk. "Over the past 20 years, we have already established significant recycling capacities at the site, including Europe's most advanced sorting system for can scrap, thereby replacing highly energy-intensive primary aluminium production. We are steadfast in this direction and underscore our commitment to the circular economy with the fourth recycling furnace for Rheinwerk."

Revitalizing old facilities plays a crucial role. One third of the decommissioned smelter will serve as a new scrap storage, equipped with facilities for sampling and preparation before melting. The expansive new halls enable efficient operation and expansion of the recycling furnaces. Additionally, storage spaces for dross in the foundry are being expanded.

At Speira's new recycling furnace, aluminium alloys destined for beverage cans will be melted. This market segment is where Speira can demonstrate its sustainability ambitions effectively.

"Recycling Hub" in the Heart of Europe

"We are transforming Rheinwerk, strategically located in the heart of Europe, into a leading 'Recycling Hub' and a pivotal point for our industry," Kurth elaborates. "This is our long-term goal for complete transformation."

Through collaborative research projects with European Aluminium and other partners, Speira continues to develop recycling-friendly alloys and advocates for deposit, return, and collection systems to increase aluminium recycling rates.

With this investment, Speira not only solidifies its position as a pioneer in aluminium recycling but also underscores its commitment to sustainable practices across various industrial sectors.
