Recycling rate for aluminium packaging in Germany reaches new record level
90.4 percent of the aluminium packaging used in Germany was recycled in 2018 - a new record. A total of 133,500 tonnes of aluminium were used in packaging, 120,700 tonnes were recycled according to the latest study by the Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung (GVM).
In conjunction with strong market growth, both the quantity of aluminium packaging recycled and the recycling rate reached an all-time high. The associated reduction in greenhouse gases is considerable and amounts to more than 610,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents per year.
GVM annually determines the amount of packaging waste produced and recycled in Germany on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency and an industrial consortium, including DAVR. The report takes into account quantities of used packaging recycled through the various dual systems and the deposit system for beverage cans, as well as quantities recovered through other channels.
